A Chromebook has been one of my favorite laptops for a long time now, and they’re perfect for kids. They’re cheap, fast, and flexible.

Chromebooks are pretty great. They have plenty of apps available, are very secure, have the safety features parents love, are very fast, and most of them are great with kids. Plus, they can get expensive Chromebooks for kids in the classroom.

At the moment, my personal experience is with the Acer Spin 15 and the 13.3-Inch Acer Aspire One Cloudbook Laptop for Kids.

However, I’ve also included lots of content from other bloggers, and I’ll update this list throughout the year.

This guide is loaded with all the info you’ll need to choose the right Chromebook for your kids.

I’m doing a new Chromebook for kids guide in 2019. Do you have any suggestions for what I should include? Please feel free to email me.

1. 2018 Acer 15.6" HD WLED Chromebook 15

Our rating: 9 / 10

2018 Acer 15.6" HD WLED Chromebook 15

Check Price on Amazon

Pros:

  • Great for kids
  • Has a HDMI slot
  • Great Price

This laptop has an Intel Celeron CPU, which is good for basic users but probably not for gamers. With 4GB of RAM, it will run most things you need, but it will run a little slower than with a more powerful CPU. You can find cheaper Chromebooks, but most are older models with lower specs.

The machine has a 15.6" diagonal HD display that is great for kids to watch videos on and a RAM memory of 4 GB. It comes with an HDMI slot and is great for watching YouTube or playing browser games. It only has 16 GB of memory, which means you will have to clear it before you open your browser or any other applications.

It has an SD and a Micro SD card slot as well. This is a Chromebook which means that all your data is stored in the cloud and you don't need to worry about upgrading the memory. It relies heavily on Google applications.

2. Acer Chromebook R 11 Convertible

Our rating: 8 / 10

Acer Chromebook R 11 Convertible

Check Price on Amazon

Pros:

  • Affordable
  • Solid Performance
  • Touchscreen
  • Sturdy
  • Good Battery Life
  • Compact Tablet Design
  • Comes with a stylus

Cons:

  • Too heavy for backpacks
  • Keyboard, trackpad could be better
  • No apps for Kindle/Android
  • Speakers are quiet
  • Low Storage Capacity

The Acer R 11 is a Google-branded Chrome OS device that provides a laptop/tablet hybrid experience. Shaped like an ordinary stick with a touchscreen all over, the Acer R 11 comes with a detachable keyboard cover. The keyboard is pretty cramped, though, reducing typing efficiency.

Acer loaded this Chromebook with a 1.60GHz Intel N3150 processor, and 4GB of DDR3L memory. It’s a great processor for a Chromebook, but you’ll be surprised at how locked down the operating system really is.

Since there are many apps and extensions available, you’ll really appreciate the USB 3.0 port and the media card slot. The microSD reader is especially useful, as it gives you all the capability of an Android device. The speakers are pretty clear, but not too loud.

Our rating: 8 / 10

Samsung Chromebook 3

Check Price on Amazon

Pros:

  • Very good battery life (up to 12 hours)
  • Sturdy processor: Intel Celeron N3060 1.6 GHz Processor
  • Full-keyboard makes typing a breeze
  • Good viewing angles (despite the lack of IPS)
  • Offers a wide selection of ports and USB Type C ports
  • Solid build quality and lightweight since it’s made mostly from plastic
  • Easy to setup and use
  • Great for everyday use, playing light games, browsing the internet, etc.
  • Remember this is a Chromebook, not and Android tablet, so don’t expect it to replace your PC.

Cons:

  • Plastic build which can creak a little
  • The screen is relatively low resolution, only 1280×800
  • Despite not being an IPS screen, the viewing angles still aren’t that good
  • On the cheaper side, unlike other Chromebooks from Samsung.

HP Chromebook 11 G4 11.6 Inch Laptop

Check Price on Amazon

Pros:

  • Price is right
  • It has a long battery life, which you have to change.

Cons:

  • Small with limited features.
  • A few irritating bugs and software issues.

The HP Chromebook 11 G4 is a small, light-weight and portable laptop ideal for students. It features a long-lasting battery life so you can unplug it and get back to it whenever you want.

The HP Chromebook 11 G4 is a basic laptop which is not loaded with the many features, such as webcams, touchscreen functions, and speedy performance, but it must be remembered that this laptop’s (entry-level) price tag also means that it is affordable and pocket-friendly.

This HP Chromebook is powered by Intel’s N2840 Celeron dual-core processor. The Celeron processor is a decent processor, but it is no match for the latest Intel Core i7 processor which is preferred in high-end laptops.

Our rating: 7 / 10

HP Chromebook 11 Touchscreen

Check Price on Amazon

Pros:

  • Two years of work and more for a very competitive price.
  • Great for browsing the web and working in the cloud.

Cons:

  • No optical drive.

The HP Chromebook 11 is a newer version of the HP Chromebook 14 that is available on the older version of this list. We’ve kept the newest version of the HP Chromebook 11 here so that we can include the smaller than average version of the Chromebook 11.

There’s nothing too fancy about this HP Chromebook 11. It comes with a good quality touchscreen display, 4GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage. It even has an HDMI port and an SD card slot for adding storage space and viewing photos.

It’s the smallest of three versions of the HP Chromebook 11, making it a great option for younger kids or those who are just looking for a smaller screen.

The Acer C740 is an ideal machine for long studying sessions. It also has a comfy keyboard and responsive trackpad. The device could have more storage space, which means it won’t be able to hold a lot of files and folders. But the storage is expandable.

  • Sturdy build
  • Lightweight
  • Keypad covered by Gorilla Glass
  • Metal body

Cons:

  • Plastic construction
  • Doesn’t come with a Bluetooth keyboard

The ASUS C101 is essentially a 2-in-1 Chromebook that comes with a Rockchip RK3399 processor, 4GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and an impressive keyboard. It features a slim design that is compact, but sturdy and feels like it will hold up to daily wear and tear.

The Chromebook C101 also features a terrificly responsive keyboard that’s actually made with Gorilla Glass for increased durability. The touchpad is also responsive, but features a plastic construction. While it doesn’t feel as premium as the rest of the device, it will get the job done. You’ll also be able to connect compatible mice.

Lenovo Chromebook C330 2-in-1 Convertible Laptop

Check Price on Amazon

Pros:

  • Attractive white color
  • Amazing internal speakers
  • Solid build quality
  • Touchscreen display
  • Lightweight
  • All-day battery life

Cons:

  • Slow boot-up time
  • Rather small keyboard
  • Absence of ports

The first thing that we noticed about the Lenovo Chromebook C330 is the incredibly attractive white body it comes in. You can spot the Chromebook from about 20 feet away, and so can everyone else. This is a huge advantage for you if you travel a lot.

Despite the white color, neither fingerprints nor dust will stand out, as the Chromebook C330 has a rubberized finish on the lid and your fingers too will slip off easily, making it clean to use all the time. It employs an anti-glare IPS display that offers wide viewing angles, but as stated by a few users, colors are somewhat distorted when watching video.

However, as per the users, what makes this Chromebook so good is the speakers. Powered by JBL-Daisytone technology, the pair of speakers on the C330 provides an immersive sound experience, which is something rare in Chromebooks, so it’s a good bonus.

The processor has enough oomph to play videos and some games. Speaking of games, the Chromebook 13 offers 4GB of RAM and a 16GB SSD hard drive.

13. Newest Lenovo 11.6-inch Premier Rugged Chromebook

Our rating: 6 / 10

Newest Lenovo 11.6-inch Premier Rugged Chromebook

Check Price on Amazon

Pros:

  • Generous storage (16GB)
  • Sturdy
  • Easily portable
  • Not too big or heavy (slightly more than an average paperback book)

Cons:

  • After a couple of months, the rubber on the lid edges started to peel off.
  • Lid feels loose
  • Speaker placement is not optimal
  • Display is not of the best quality

All in all, I was happy to find that it was a lot more capable than I had anticipated. I expected it to be extremely limited in function and intended for very basic use. To my pleasant surprise, I was able to stream movies, play games, listen to music, etc.!

My opinion is that this Chromebook is best suited to a middle school student that needs to do some schoolwork in between computer games. I would not buy this Chromebook for a high school student or adult.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the best Chromebook to buy for kids?

The best Chromebook for kids depends on what you want them to be using it for. If you are looking for one to use in school, then you might consider something like the Google Pixelbook. It is lightweight, has a long battery life and has a lot of built-in educational apps.

The best Chromebook for kids to use for play is the Samsung Chromebook 3. It has has great sound and a large screen, so it is great for watching movies and using YouTube Kids.

However, if you are looking for something to help them with their schoolwork and homework, then you might prefer a Chromebook compatible with Google classroom.

What are the best Chromebooks for 2021?

If you buy a Chromebook for your kids, it’s important to get one that’s ideal for the age of your child. For example, if you have a six year old, you would want a device that’s relatively durable, easy to use, and includes some form of parental controls.

It’s also a good idea to pick a device that can withstand a bit of rough handling. Kids are eager to try out their growing muscles and are up to all sorts of things, especially when they’re bored. A ruggedized Chromebook is perfect for situations like these. It’s also a benefit because they’re more resilient to what you can imagine.

Which Chromebook is the best for students?

As someone who first used Chromebooks in high school, I’ll admit that they are not the best devices for students. At the time, there were some well-known problems. The biggest one was connectivity. If you were in a place with poor WiFi, you could pretty much forget about doing your work. Also the storage was very small, almost always under the 5GB mark.

It has been a few years though and there have been many products come and go. Samsung came out with the Chromebooks that most students go for because they’re inexpensive yet extremely powerful with the Core M3 processor and 32GB storage. Acer also came out with a great model that has a touch display. The biggest downside is that it’s a bit pricey.

What's the best Chromebook for a 10 year old?

Unlike other PCs, Chromebooks are designed to be lightweight and easier for kids to carry. Most of them feature a rugged design that can withstand the occasional spills and knocks a child may accidentally cause. Many also come with rubber bumpers on the corners to absorb the impact.

Most Chromebooks also have low-power processors and come with long battery life. This makes Chromebooks an ideal choice for primary school kids and all you have to do is charge them every other day.

Conclusion

The best Chromebook for your child depends on a few different factors. Maybe you're looking for something more durable for your kindergartner. Or you just want a device that's easy to use because you're the one teaching them how to use the device. There are lots of factors to take into consideration. This buying guide will help you determine what they are and help you pick the best Chromebook for your child.
