Have you broken or worn out a few keyboards in the past few years? If so, then you’re not alone. It seems like every keyboard nowadays suffers the same fate!

All of them mysteriously break down and wear out around the “F” and “J” keys and the spacebar.

I always thought it was just bad luck. It wasn’t until I purchased a new ergonomic keyboard that I realised that it’s the keyboard that’s at fault, not just my bad luck.

Like most of us, I was a die-hard fan of big and clunky mechanical keyboards. I’ve stuck with mechanical keyboards since I first started typing for many years and never imagined that there was an alternative.

Before that, I always thought that a nice feel of chattering and clacking keys was a sign of a good keyboard, not bad ergonomics.

Those, however, were the days before I became a father and my life went through a complete turnaround. I direct a lot of my time and attention at my son. In fact, we’re as inseparable as peanut butter and jelly!

Pros:

  • Backlit
  • Compact
  • Productive
  • Healing pain

The Periboard-612 is the best split keyboard you can get when you have a limited budget. It’s ideal for office workers with a cubicle and it’s an excellent choice for college students and workers who spend more than 10 hours on their computers per day.

Although it’s not remarkably comfortable or well-built, it does come with a surprisingly useful trackpad for navigating your computer.

I’ve been using it for a few months and I did notice a remarkable pain relief in my shoulder and neck areas. It makes ratting really convenient, especially if you use it to game or code.

Pros:

  • ERGONOMIC DESIGN- featuring an adjustable design, you can change the angle from flat to a 5 degree tilt. This keyboard is made with your comfort in mind and your wrists can thank you later

  • HIDDEN TRAY- The hidden tray is a convenient and easy way to keep your mouse with you at all times. The rubber grip prevents it from sliding, and you can stow your mouse inside protecting it from dirt and dust.

Cons:

  • Battery- the keyboard requires 2 AAA batteries that are a little difficult to install
  • Keys- the keys are touchy and sometimes require added pressure to pop up or type

The Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Keyboard was designed with the user in mind. The benefits are obvious once you start using it. It is a comfortable keyboard that can be used by anyone who is looking for an ergonomic solution.

3. Kinesis Advantage2 Silver Ergonomic Keyboard

Our rating: 8 / 10

Kinesis Advantage2 Silver Ergonomic Keyboard

Check Price on Amazon

Pros:

  • Split design
  • Supports the touch typing
  • Very comfortable
  • Widely used for computer gaming

Cons:

  • Takes some getting used to
  • Expensive

The second Kinesis keyboard, the Kinesis Advantage2 is a decent choice if you decide you want to go from a basic standard to a gaming keyboard and an even better choice if you want to go from a 10-keyless to a regular keyboard. It also comes in white, but that’s just a cosmetic face-lift.

What does it give you? The full-size keys come with an elegant tapered keycap. The tapered design helps reduce finger travel distance, and, in turn, the fatigue. The most important feature of the tapered keycap is the slight arc, which helps reduce hand and finger extension.

The spacing is excellent and supports the touch typing. At that same time, it is extremely comfortable for both typing and gaming. The keys themselves are available in three finishes: silver/white, blue, and black. They all have that loud audible sound, remembering you of old-school gaming keyboards.

4. Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard

Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard

Pros:

  • Has a detachable palm support
  • Provides customizable comfort with adjustable tilting
  • Backlit keys for easier typing in low-light environments
  • Has a built-in trackpad for quick navigation and control

With a great variety of keyboards to choose from, finding the perfect choice is much easier than it sounds.

This is especially true if you have a couple more factors to take into consideration, like for example, the design of your room, the age of the kids (or pets), the color of the room, the latest trend in the furniture industry, and so much more.

You want the key board to match your room perfectly, so that it won’t be a distraction.

6. Perixx Periboard-512 Ergonomic Split Keyboard

Our rating: 8 / 10

Perixx Periboard-512 Ergonomic Split Keyboard

Check Price on Amazon

The Perixx has a pretty interesting approach to ergonomics with its Periboard-512. These days, most ergonomic keyboards are split down the middle, but the Periboard-512 is split between the left and right hand.

This keyboard is one of the few ergonomic keyboards that has big keys. They’re about the size of your head and have a slight bulge making them easier to press. The keys are laid out in a trapezoid shape further helping you rest your hands in a more natural position and reducing the amount of unnecessary movement, which can be a trigger for ergonomic injuries.

The fit and quality of the Periboard-512 are also pretty good. It’s rock solid, and if your desk angle is not too extreme, it keeps the keyboard mostly level with your desk giving it a true ergonomic feel, something you can’t get from your standard keyboard.

Our rating: 8 / 10

Logitech Ergo K860 Wireless Ergonomic Keyboard

Check Price on Amazon

Pros:

  • Ergonomic Keyboards
  • Long Battery

3-year Battery Life (Fast Shipping).

Though there are plenty of options out there, the Logitech K811, the K340, and the K380 are the three best ergonomic keyboards available right now. They are all wireless, with the keyboard and mouse, and the K380 is a combination keyboard and mouse, so it is really the only one you need. The other two are merely better versions of the K380.

Which one to buy? If you have a Mac, you need the K811, as it is Bluetooth only. Mac doesn’t have full Bluetooth support, so you need to use a Bluetooth dongle if your operating system is Windows. If you have a PC, buy the K380, as it is less expensive, and you need a USB port anyway.

Durability is one of the most important features of an ergonomic keyboard. Even if there are some that offer pleasant free speed and additional short-cuts, you won’t be comfortable practicing your typing skills with a flimsy plastic piece of equipment.

That’s why it’s not surprising that the list of the top ergonomic keyboards has a lot of goods that were made from aluminum. Just make sure that all the pieces of the product are durable.

The keyboard itself should be sturdy and able to handle pressure from accidental keystrokes, which is why you should look for a manufacturer made of high-quality plastic without any flimsy plastics.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Which ergonomic keyboard is best?

This is a question that has been asked for decades, and that will keep being repeated for years to come. Until the end of time, keyboard innovators will come up with better keyboards, and it’ll take years for muscle memory to move to the next revolutionary keyboard.

This is why it’s still hard to say which keyboard is the best. We can cite one or two to stand out in a specific area. That is the best you will get until a new keyboard that’s better than the rest is built.

Another reason why it’s hard to say which ergonomic keyboard is best is because people have different needs and preferences. Every person’s workspace is different, and there is no single keyboard they can recommend, except the one that best fits that person’s needs.

Are ergonomic keyboards really better?

The simple answer to this question is yes. Ergonomic keyboards are better for your health and well being. They have a split design and adjustable hinges, allowing you to easily type in a more natural wrist and arm position. All this contributes to reducing repetitive stress which can lead to pain, injury, and carpal tunnel syndrome. In addition, these keyboards take a lot of pressure off the hands and wrists by allowing all your fingers to work together. In a way ergonomic keyboards are a progressive evolution from the normal flat keyboards.

The good news is that such ergonomic keyboards are available at a variety of prices. In fact, you can find some under 100 dollars. So if you get one, why worry about the cost? You will be getting better health and a couple extra years at least to enjoy some of the finer things in life!

Which brand makes the best keyboards?

Keyboards are one of the most important components for any computer. It’s vital to choose the right one, especially if you’re looking for good ergonomics. Keyboards that feature chunky low-profile keys are still popular in the industry, operated by membrane switches (referred to as CHE or CrO2 switches).

CHE switches are very popular for their durable contact points and minimal noise. CHE switches are considerably louder than other membrane switches like the Kailh an clicky ones.

Most mechanical keyboards use MX mechanical switches. These are activated via direct contact and require a firm finger press. MX switches come in various types from simple tactile to linear to clicky ones. There are also alternatives that have Alps-designed switches that are popular in Europe.

What is the best keyboard for carpal tunnel?

There are so many ergonomic keyboards out there but a good ergonomic keyboard for carpal tunnel should definitely have these features; no wrist rest, specific placement of the keys as well as a split design for each hand to avoid a lot of lateral movements. Another important thing is to go for a keyboard that is optimized to reduce your typing frequency and minimize the amount of effort you need to perform each stroke.

Conclusion

From the top brands like Microsoft, Logitech and Adesso, there are so many options for ergonomic keyboards. New for 2017, we have already added a number of new keyboards to our list but this guide should serve as a very good starting point for anyone looking to make their first purchase (or upgrade to a newer model). Our research suggests that the Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Keyboard is by far the most popular ergonomic keyboard on the market.
